Get an Irish Tweed Hat for the Irish in You

There is nothing that says you are Irish or a lover of the Irish ways, than the type of hat you are wearing. The Irish tweed hat is the most poplar style of Celtic hat you will likely encounter, especially if you travel to Ireland. Many of these hats are of the unisex variety, as long as you choose the right solid or patchwork color! patchwork hats have different colors of wool patches sewn together for a unique style not seen anywhere else. Let's discuss the different styles of Irish tweed hats you may be interested in.
The Eske Hat
Americans are familiar with the beach bum style hats popular on sandy beaches. This could be the Irish version of the beach bum hat. It is an oval style cap with a flared brim that hangs down. You can crumble or fold this cap to fit in a container or pocket and then pop it back open when needed, unwrinkled. The Eske can be worn by men or women, but is usually worn by the ladies of Ireland.
The Thatch Hat
The thatch style Irish tweed hat is a popular hat for ladies also. It has its similarities to the Eske tweed hat but its brim is not flared much and is soft, therefore hanging way down. It has a semi-square top and can be seen on young ladies during rainy or chilly days. One positive of this hat is its ability to be folded and placed in a purse or bag, ready to be taken out at a moments notice. The thatch style cap is generally styled in gray or brown colors, but can be found in patchwork varieties as well.
The Sherlock Holmes Cap
One particular interesting version of an Irish tweed is the Sherlock Holmes style. The famous Sherlock Holmes character is the London detective, created by author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, known for his sense of dry wit and logic. The Sherlock Holmes cap of course resembles the very hat Sherlock wore, but is made of new Irish wool like other Irish tweed hats. The intellectual in you may long for this style of hat though your spouse may not be a fan of it. These have adjustable or nonadjustable ear flaps for those chilly mornings. They come in patchwork designs or solid colors. If you are a pipe smoker you will especially want a tweed hat like this.
The Vintage Driving Tweed
Sometimes called the "vintage cap", the Irish flat cap is another style of hat that is very popular in Ireland and beyond. This style is probably the most common tweed you will see men wearing and it is a cap that may define Irish heritage. Often you will see chaps wearing one while driving around in a British convertible. That is sometimes why you see this cap called an "Irish driving cap." Surely you have seen this hat in the movies? The Irish flat cap can be worn formally or informally, as it goes with casual shorts just as well as a suit. It comes in a Donegal tweed variety, patchwork, herringbone, solid color or checkered.
Irish Walking Hat
Back in 1968 the Irish walking style tweed hat was developed. This type of cap can be in a patchwork style or solid colors. This is a unisex type of head covering, depending on the colors of course. As the name implies, this is a popular hat to grab on your day out in the market or in a casual stroll in the country. It is similar in style to the oval wool dress stetsons worn by men in the 1930's, but with a straight short brim of equal width all the way around.
