10 Things You Should Keep In Your Diaper Bag

Some people carry too much in their diaper bags. The bag is huge, stuffed full of who knows what and it just doesn't fit even though the bag is big enough for a weekend away. Others seem to get away with the little grab and go portable change kits which are no more than a change mat with a few pockets!
No matter whether you are a kitchen sink taker or a severe minimalist I still think there are ten items that are essentials for you to keep in your diaper bag at all times and I have listed them in what I consider to be order of importance.
1. Spare diapers - at least one but 3 or 4 would be ideal. Even if you are a cloth diaper user it never hurts to carry a disposable nappy or two for emergencies.
2. Wipes - packets of wipes are handy for clean ups and can be stored in your matching wipes case if you have one. Some mums like to use damp cloths which they keep and wash each day.
3. Change of clothes for baby - at least one change for the guaranteed blow-out or nappy failure. If you have room why not consider a change of clothes for yourself (I know I have had to drive home with milk/vomit stains on my shoulder and a damp patch on my skirt on more than one occasion from a nappy fail)
4. Change mat - padded is ideal, but one that folds or rolls up small is a good idea. If it is colour co-ordinated with your bag then even better and all the more stylish.
5. Diaper bags - for storing soiled diapers until they can be disposed of, many are even scented!
6. Diaper rash cream - really handy to have if a rash develops during the outing because there is nothing worse than an irritable baby with a sore bottom.
7. Hand sanitiser - essential when you are not near a sink for hand-washing with anti-bacterial soap to prevent the spread of bacteria.
8. Pouch for soiled clothing - a separate pouch or sealable pocket within the bag is a good place for storing soiled clothing until they can be cleaned on returning home.
9. Snacks/drinks for Mum/Dad and baby/siblings - always have snacks and drinks on hand to ward off grumpy, hungry toddlers or your own hunger needs. Especially useful if you are caught out by road works causing delays, a car accident or other emergency such as severe weather.
10. Cloth or wrap for babies that vomit or spill after feeds - a cloth or muslin wrap can come in really handy for mopping up minor spills or can even double as a temporary change mat if needed.
So, whether you are popping out of the house for 5 minutes, an hour or the whole day make sure you have your essential packed neatly in to your diaper bag. If you still have room optional extras to consider are a pacifier, favourite toy or comfort object.
